چکیده

[1] The global-scale surface type 2 unit first identified with the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) remains enigmatic. Competing hypotheses suggest that it represents either basaltic andesite or some form of altered basalt rich in dioctahedral smectite clay minerals and/or spectrally similar amorphous silica phases. Common dioctahedral smectites contain a diagnostic feature in a portion of TES spectra that has been excluded in previous studies because of atmospheric CO2 absorption. We exploit the relative transparency of this spectral region to develop two indices that in tandem, distinguish between certain smectites and amorphous phases. Smectites are not detected in northern lowlands type 2 settings, consistent with other datasets, but the case for primary or secondary amorphous silica phases is strengthened. Separately, one index reveals an abundance of isolated type 2 occurrences in the southern high-latitudes (>50 ) associated with dunes, the other shows olivine concentrations between 40 and +30 . Basalt versus Andesite in the Martian Crust : New Geochemical Perspectives

Introduction: Data from the MGS Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) has shown that surface type 1 (ST1) materials, interpreted as basalt, dominate the ancient crust in the southern highlands of Mars [1]. Large expanses of surface type 2 (ST2) materials in the northern lowlands have been variously interpreted as andesite [1, 2], oxidized crystalline basalt [3], or partly weathered basalt [4]. Th...

کانی شناسی بخش رس و ژئوشیمی خاکهای تشکیل شده از سنگ های مادری دگرگون و آذرین قلیایی در ناحیه لاهیجان

The mineralogical and geochemical composition of the soils of three representat ive pedons fanned on basaltic andesite, andes itic basalt and phyllite were investigated. Results by XRF showed that progressive weathering of rocks have been marked by gradual accumulation of AI, Fe, Ti, Mg. H30+ and depletion of Na, K, Ca and Si in the soi l; although, predominant clay, loss and gain trend of...

Analysis of terrestrial and Martian volcanic compositions using thermal emission spectroscopy 2. Application to Martian surface spectra from the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer

Atmospherically corrected thermal infrared spectra of large regions of the Martian surface from the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS TES) previously have been interpreted to represent two general spectral classes. One class represents a basalt to basaltic andesite composition, and the other class represents a basaltic andesite to andesite composition. We have performed ne...

Aqueous Alteration in Martian Meteorites: Comparing Mineral Relations in Igneous-rock Weathering of Martian Meteorites and in the Sedimentary Cycle of Mars

Many of the minerals observed or inferred to occur in the sediments and sedimentary rocks of Mars, from a variety of Mars-mission spacecraft data, also occur in Martian meteorites. Even Martian meteorites recovered after some exposure to terrestrial weathering can preserve preterrestrial evaporite minerals and useful information about aqueous alteration on Mars, but the textures and textural co...

Analysis of surface compositions in the Oxia Palus region on Mars from Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer Observations

[1] We examine the distribution of Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) derived surface compositions in the Oxia Palus region on Mars through high-spatial-resolution mapping and integration with Mars Orbiter Camera and Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter data sets. We also fit the basalt and andesite-weathered basalt interpretations of TES surface type 1 and type 2 materials into multiple working hypot...
